Born 5-1-17. Some years we do a fun theme for names.  This year we decided to go with names of characters from The Lion King Movie from 1994.  Some of the characters will be more well-known than others and some names are from the sequel movies. Pumbaa was the hilarious warthog and sidekick to Timon.

‘Pumbaa’ is a bay stallion with a HUGE white bald face going over the eye on the right side.  His left eye is blue and no white on his legs.  Pumbaa will be registered with the APHA because her dam, Leos San Ella JB aka Pepper, is a solid bred registered with the American Paint Horse Association. However, when you take a good look at her pedigree she is over ¾ quarter horse. She looks like and is built like a thick, muscular quarter horse. We have had Pepper since she was a weanling as she came from Barbra and Jarrette Johnson at Mandaree, North Dakota at the edge of the Badlands. We have two of her sisters out of the same mare and a gelding by her sire. They are ALL good riding horses that have been essentials of our saddle horse bunch. They are all getting up in age and Pepper herself is 17 this year.  We retained her 2014 buckskin filly, San Ella Drift JW as a riding mare for the ranch.

Pumbaa’s sire is TRR Paddys Texas Gin aka Tex.  This is Tex’s ninth foal crop. He puts very thick and muscular foals on the ground with very nice muscle expression on them as well as a lot of athleticism and as they develop they have a lot of vigor. The oldest ones have been started under saddle by various buyers and we are hearing good things from all of them.  The Paddys Irish Whiskey horses are making a name for themselves in everything from cutting to cowhorse events to roping horses and are very versatile—Tanquery Gin, Doc O’Lena, Docs Starlight, Poco Tivio, Peppy San Badger.

Pumbaa is a ‘super-sized’ Tex foal and pictures don’t really tell you just how big he really is.  He has some unfolding to do yet to get all his parts moving in the same direction at the same time. Once he gets that figured out he certainly should be a big athletic gelding able to do a lot of stuff well.
