We are extremely pleased to welcome ‘Smarty’ a 2013 bay roan mare we purchased from Swenson Martin Quarter Horse and Cattle Company as a yearling. She is one of her sire’s first foals. She comes from a North Dakota ranch that raises and uses geldings who sell later on as top notch ranch horses at various regional sales including the Ken McNab sale in Wyoming. Smarty’s sire, Docz Coy Bandit, goes back to names that speak for themselves such as Smart Little Lena, Fritz Command and Doc Bar. What caught our eye the most was Smarty’s bottom side. Her dam goes back to PC Bronsin owned by Crago Performance Horses in Belle Fourche SD. PC Bronsin is a son of Sun Frost and in himself is very impressive and leaves behind an remarkable entourage. He won the All-Around title at the World Foundation Quarter Horse World Show at the age of 15. Placing or winning in nearly every event really showed his versatility and style. This amazing stud has also sired winners in reining, roping, barrels, poles, cow horse, cutting and ranch horse competitions. ‘Bronsin’ is one of the few sons of Sun Frost out of a producing daughter of John Red AAA, who was also the first AAA horse in SD. John Red also sired big time calf and rope horses and was the sire of PRCA Circuit calf roping horse of the year. PC Bronsin has shown his ability to sire cowy colts that can run, stop and turn on a dime. They are trainable with good minds that won’t quit you. Not only does she add this great sire to our program, but Sugar Bars is only twice off of her papers. This mare was purchased to cross back on any one of our Paddys Irish Whiskey stallions.
Smarty was started as a two year old and did very well. We did not ride her long as our intention all along was for her to be a broodmare. As a three year old she sustained an injury early in breeding season and was pulled from pasture. Smarty is a very friendly and yet confident young mare. She is healed up and will be exposed again this year for a 2018 foal to Whoop Up Whiskey.
