2023 Smoky Black Stallion
Return to Previous Page

Born 5-19-23. Some years we do a fun theme for names. This year we decided to go with Geology and things that come from the ground.  Many of these names are a little loose in thoughts regarding if they are elements, minerals, rocks, gemstones or colors etc.  Cobalt is a chemical element that is found in the Earth's crust only in a chemically combined form, save for small deposits found in alloys of natural meteoric iron. The free element, produced by reductive smelting, is a hard, lustrous, silver metal.

‘Cobalt’ is a smoky black stallion with a white strip all the way down his face. He has a right front ankle, and both rear white ankles. His dam, Sapa Mia Reed JW, is a mare we raised out of Little Sapa and JK Jay Reed. Take a good look at the speed pedigree on Mia’s bottom side. According to Circle Dot Horses, Mia Cash Too was a gentle, AAA Stakes Placed Winner with a nice disposition who ran the 3rd fastest qualifying time in the All-American Derby and sired foals that went on the be race horses, barrel horses and arena even horses and had plenty of cow.  Little Sapa leaves Dash For Cash on Mia’s papers and also gives her Leroy Brown, Three Bars and Jet Deck through both Easy Jet and Jet Smooth.  Mia’s sire is a 96% foundation bred stallion with Poco Pine, Continental King by King P-234, Joe Reed II and Whiskey Bert all on his papers.  Her first foal with Whoop Up Whiskey, Whiskey Up Mesa JW, is now in Montana and her buyer came back to purchase a second horse in 2019. Her 2017 foal, Sarafina Drift JW was a smokey black that we kept for ourselves by Walter O Rielly. We are ranching on Sarafina and now call her Sci-Fi. Mia’s 2018 foal was also by Walter O Rielly, Australia Drift JW and is in Nevada. We hear wonderful things about her. Her 2020 foal, Mia Holly Gunpowder is by PG Gunpowder and we are keeping her as a replacement for now. Her 2021 foal, Mia Willow Drift JW, went to MT with repeat buyers.

Cobalt’s sire is Walter O Rielly aka Radar.  He has become a great addition to our program, and this is his 10th foal crop for us. We were looking for a foundation Driftwood bred stallion to hopefully get some replacement fillies out of some of our better mares. Radar is a 90.234% foundation bred perlino stallion who goes to King P-234 ten times, to Driftwood four times with strong doses of Joe Reed, Three Bars and a little Doc Bar. Radar is a 16 hand horse with a huge stride and a gentle personality. He has excellent bone, athleticism and conformation. His lineage tells us that his offspring will have cow and will be capable of performing at any level.

Cobalt is a very elegant foal. This is an exciting repeat experiment for us and so far we are pleased with what we see. This foal will have quite a bit of speed. All of Radar’s foals have wonderful dispositions and are BIG horses that can cover some ground out in the open. We are considering keeping this colt but please let us know if he interests you.
