Born 7-7-26. Some years we do a fun theme for names. This year for Top Gun Whiskey we are continuing with Top Gun Call Signs from the original 1986 movie and the 2022 movie. Our other stallions will have the names of Rock Bands from the 70s, 80s and 90s. This colt is named Special after 38 Special. We would have named hi just 38 but AQHA does not allow numbers in the registered name. But any buyers are welcome to call him ‘38’. 38 Special is an American rock band formed in 1974, known for their Southern rock sound and hits like "Hold On Loosely" and "Caught Up in You."
‘Special’ is a bay/bay roan stallion with no white on his face, right front white inside heel bulb and white on both rear pasterns. If roaning does not become apparent, we will test. Special’s dam is Paddys Gin Cactus JW. She was Whizzin Lena’s last foal and we are so happy she was a she! Whiz was mare we purchased from Ryan Fleetwood at Fleetwood Farms because we have always wanted a Topsail Whiz daughter! So when she became available to us, we grabbed her in hopes to retain some daughters out of her to cross back on any of our stallions! Bred at Bob Loomis Quarter Horses in Oklahoma, Whiz is a very well-bred reining mare. Sired by Topsail Whiz and out of a mare by Justa Doc Olena by Doc O Lena, this mare was third in the South Country Derby Non-Pro division in 2001 and won the Non-Pro Reining Futurity at the Canadian Supreme in Red Deer, Alberta. Whiz’s earnings include NRHA $3,754. She also has four performing foals. Her sire Topsail Whiz is in the Hall of Fame, a NRHA money earner, AQHA World Show Qualifier, AQHA Leading Sire and ROM Performance. His offspring have also earned many accomplishments as well including World Champion Offspring, Reserve World Champion Offspring, NRHA Futurity Champion Offspring, Superior Performance Offspring, ROM Performance Offspring, NRHA Money-earners, NCHA Money-earners, NRCHA Money-earners, Halter Point Earners and NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire. Her 2017 foal was as dun stallion, Goldun Topsail by Jaz Poco Goldun Blue and we have retained him as a stallion for ourselves. Whiz passed away in 2026 at the age of 29. She definitely left her mark on our program with both Topper and Cactus. Cactus’s sire is TRR Paddys Texas Gin aka Tex. Tex turned 20 in 2026. He puts very thick and muscular foals on the ground with very nice muscle expression on them as well as a lot of athleticism and as they develop, they have a lot of vigor. We hear good things from people who have purchased Tex foals over the years and many have come back for repeat purchases. The Paddys Irish Whiskey horses have made a name for themselves in everything from cutting to cowhorse events to roping horses and are very versatile—Tanquery Gin, Doc O’Lena, Docs Starlight, Poco Tivio, Peppy San Badger. Tex daughters, when bred to current barrel stallions are producing 1D and 2D barrel horses with other owners.
Special’s sire is Jacks Our Bartender. Jacks Our Bartender is a son of Bartenders Memory by Two ID Bartender and out of a granddaughter of Two Eyed Jack, Watch Miss Jo Jackie, born in 2003. Unfortunately, due to a stifle injury from being kicked by a mare, Jack was not able to stay sound enough to enter the show ring but was able to prove his athletic ability. Since then several of his colts have ended up in the roping arena and continue to prove their athleticism and great minds. By 2015 Hockenson’s realized that he was producing some really great roping horses and decided to see if they could keep his stifle sound enough to show and sure enough in a very short time, he quickly earned 5.5 AQHA Heading Points of his own proving that his offspring accomplishments were not by chance. He is a great horse to be around and out produces himself every time. Jack has 3 AQHA performing offspring. Many of his other foals have gone on to be great rodeo horses or rope horses competing and earning money in different associations. We bought Jack with one idea to be to put him on our Paddys Irish Whiskey daughters and granddaughters. He has the moves that they do but in a bigger horse package.
Special is a very nicely bred foal. We would expect him to make an excellent ranch horse or possible rope horse prospect with an excellent disposition. Special is the first foal for his dam. He is a little mite as a first time baby, but is spunky and acting like a big horse in a little package. As always we are excited to watch new crosses mature. Don’t let his birthdate hold you back. By the time he is three it won’t matter. Dam is 14-2 and sire is 15-3 so your guess is a good as ours on where he will size up in between there since this is a first time cross. Help yourselves to this cutie!
