Born 5-5-21. “Bluestem” is a smoky black stallion with a small snip and possible a small amount of white on rear right. This year our names are flower/tree/rangeland plants themed. It stuck when our first foal was born and we started calling her ‘Posie’ which means a ‘bunch of flowers’. So, we decided to go with it.
Bluestem’s dam is My Kittys Belle JW who is 91% NFQHA. She is one of our proven saddle horses and we are very excited to get a foal from her! Belle was shown by our daughter in Colt to Maturity 4-H classes as a yearling to 5 year old. Belle is a very kind mare and an energetic riding horse. She’s very quick, sure footed and a natural lead changer both in the arena and out in the hills. Whether you line her out to ride the pasture or put her in a circle in the arena, she stays where you put her until you are ready to stop and then ‘stop’ she does. She has spent most of her life behind cattle here at the ranch. We have a full sister to Belle, 2009 My Kittys Melody JW, who is also in our broodmare bunch and has produced REALLY nice foals for us. So nice we kept 3 out of her 4 for ourselves. Belle’s mother, My Little Kitty, was owned by Barbra Kennedy Johnson and was given to Ella. Belle’s sire was our late 96% NFQHA stallion, JK Jay Reed, who was a consistent producer. Belle’s 2020 filly, Top Gun Empire JW was an excellent example of a JK Jay Reed daughter bred back to one of our Paddys Irish Whiskey sons. We are very happy with that cross and we have kept that filly back for a broodmare prospect.
Bluestem’s sire is Walter O Rielly aka Radar. He has become a great addition to our program, and this is his 9th foal crop for us. We were looking for a foundation Driftwood bred stallion to hopefully get some replacement fillies out of some of our better mares. Radar is a 90.234% foundation bred perlino stallion who goes to King P-234 ten times, to Driftwood four times with strong doses of Joe Reed, Three Bars and a little Doc Bar. Radar is a 16 hand horse with a huge stride and a gentle personality. He has excellent bone, athleticism and conformation. His lineage tells us that his offspring will have cow and will be capable of performing at any level.
Bluestem is a very nice foundation bred foal. This is an exciting experiment for us and so far we are pleased with what we see. All of Radar’s foals have wonderful dispositions and are BIG horses that can cover some ground out in the open. Bluestem will be 91% NFQHA and eligible to register. He does carry a copy of the cream and does have minimal white.
Bluestem has been in training since a 2 year old and did some basic ranching on him. His sire is now passed and we have given Bluestem 4 mares for 2025 to see how he does as a stallion. We are always excited to see how new crosses work.
