“Topper” is a 90% NFQHA (F0039287) dun stallion with a right hind
coronet and partial pastern and no other white markings. We acquired
Topper as part of a package deal with his dam, Whizzin Lena. As
a grandson of Topsail Whiz and a son of Jaz Poco Goldun Blue
we could not be happier.
Topper's dam,
Whizzin Lena aka Whiz was an older mare we purchased
from Ryan Smith at Fleetwood Farms because we have always wanted a
Topsail Whiz daughter!
So when she became available to us, we grabbed
her in hopes to retain some daughters out of her to cross back on
any of our stallions, but we also ended up keeping a stallion prospect
to breed back to our mares! Bred at Bob Loomis Quarter Horses in Oklahoma,
Whiz was a very well-bred reining mare. Sired by Topsail Whiz, the
1st and only NRHA 12 million dollar sire, and out of a mare by
Justa Doc Olena by Doc O Lena, this mare was third in the South
Country Derby Non-Pro division in 2001 and won the Non-Pro Reining
Futurity at the Canadian Supreme in Red Deer, Alberta.
Whiz’s earnings total $8,112 including NRHA $3,754.
Out of her 13 foals, 4 are reported money earners
totaling $4,880 as of 11/1/2024 in both barrels and
reining. She also has produced AQHA point earners in
ranch riding and reining. Her sire Topsail Whiz is
in the Hall of Fame, a NRHA money earner, NRHA #1
all time leading sire, AQHA World Show Qualifier,
AQHA Leading Sire and ROM Performance. His offspring
have also earned many accomplishments as well
including World Champion Offspring, Reserve World
Champion Offspring, NRHA Futurity Champion
Offspring, Superior Performance Offspring, ROM
Performance Offspring, NRHA Money-earners, NCHA
Money-earners, NRCHA Money-earners, Halter Point
Earners and NRHA Six Million Dollar Sire. His
offspring also include three NRHA Million Dollar
Sires and two NRHA Two Million Dollar Sires. Whiz
had a 2019 foal, by
Whoop Up Whiskey,
Whiskey Up Genie JW
that is sold. Her 2021 foal by TRR Paddys Texas Gin,
Paddys Gin Cactus JW,
we kept for a potential broodmare prospect for
ourselves and she was started under saddle as a 3
year old. Whiz is now retired and living her life
out with us at the ranch.
Sire: Jaz Poco Goldun Blue |
Topper’s sire is Jaz Poco Goldun Blue who is the
most photographed or well-known grulla horse. He is
95% foundation and 27% Poco Bueno and 5 Panel NN.
“Blue is an exceptionally pretty & talented luminous
grulla stallion. He stands approximately 14.3+ hands
high and weighs about 1250 lbs. He is accented with
rich dark points, dark shadows, leg-barring and
tiger stripes and a distinctive dorsal stripe. His
sire and dam were grulla, plus he has over 8
generations of grulla’s in his pedigree. Blue is
HOMOZYGOUS for the dun factor, and that means he
will produce ONLY dun factor offspring - bred to ANY
color mare - he will give a red dun, dun, or grulla
foal. A remarkably talented horse, what must be
remembered about this particular stallion is that he
is not a stallion only because of his color and his
ability to throw color; but he is also a proven
animal. With all the titles to his name, and to his
progeny, there is no doubt that this is a horse who
truly has it all - conformation, disposition,
trainability, talent - all wrapped up in that great
grulla color!“ as stated by previous owner Ryan
Smith of Fleetwood Farms about Jaz Poco Goldun Blue.
He was sold to Blue Valley Quarter Horses in NE and
is now deceased. Blue was a NRHA money earner and
earner of AQHA Open Performance Register Of Merritt.
He had 22 pts in Junior & Senior Reining. He also
competed in a few AQHA Working Cow Horse shows. His
progeny has reported earnings of $10,724 as of
11/1/2024 in barrels, reining and reined cow horse.
He also produced foals who have earned AQHA pts in a
multitude of events from reining, cutting, VRH ranch
riding, barrels, heading heeling and tie down
roping, barrel racing, hunt seat equitation, hunter
under saddle, pole bending, halter. This is a great
testament to how versatile his offspring are.
Topper started very well under saddle as a two
year old. We were looking to add a higher foundation
stallion to our herd since our other stallions were
getting up in age. We are excited about Topper’s
strong reining pedigree as well. He is bred to be a
reining horse. His dam and sire are very proven in
the reining world and he has several half siblings
on both sides that are money earners in reining,
reined cowhorse, cutting or barrels that are
reported. There are probably several more out there
winning and earning that are not reported to AQHA.
We decided to not show Topper, but let him ride the
"coat tails" of his dam, sire and siblings'
achievements. Topper is the 3rd of full siblings.
His older 2016 full brother, Goldun Whizard, is also
being used as a stallion in Oregon. Topper's first
foal crop came in 2021. His foals are quite the
lookers and so far, are showing signs of being very
trainable and agreeable. We are overall very pleased
with Topper and his foundation reining bloodlines he
is bringing to our program.
